Golden Globes 2021: list of nominations unveiled, Netflix in the lead

Due to the health crisis, the date of the 78th edition of the Golden Globes 2021 has been postponed to February 28. The list of nominations was unveiled Wednesday, February 3 by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is made up of foreign press journalists based in Hollywood, and sets a first trend for the Oscars. The Nextflix platform is well ahead of the nominations.

On the cinema side, the feature films “Mank”, “The trial of the Chicago Seven”, “Nomadland,” The Father “and” Promising Young Woman “won the largest number of nominations, including that of best dramatic film. “Mank”, directed in B&W by David Fincher and produced by Netflix, is cited in six categories. Another Netflix feature film, “The trial of the Chicago Seven” by Aaron Sorkin, has five nominations.

For the first time, three female directors were selected in the Best Direction category: Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland”, Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Regina King for “One Night In Miami”.

Among the stars named, four French are in the running, including Tahar Rahim for the trophy for best dramatic actor for his interpretation in “Designated guilty” (“The Mauritanian”) by Kevin Macdonald. He will face Gary Oldman (“Mank”) and Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”).

The world of cinema has been affected since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic with the filming stopped, the closing of theaters and the postponement of the release of films, like the series which are multiplying on the platforms streaming.

The Netflix platform reigns with 42 nominations in all categories, including six for the series “The Crown”. Amazon has 10 including “One Night in Miami”, “Borat 2” and “The Sound Of Metal”.

“The Crown”, “Queen’s Gambit”, “Emily in Paris” and “Ratched” were selected in several categories for the series.

Among the big absent from the ceremony, one finds Spike Lee for “Da 5 Blood”, however favorite of the critic, and Christopher Nolan for “Tenet”. Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Zendaya were also forgotten by the organizers of the ceremony.

Unlike previous editions, the ceremony will take place virtually and will be hosted by actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on two separate sets : one in New York, the other in Los Angeles.
